April 25, 2007 Doctors For Life international Fights Malaria EMBARGO: Immediate Release Today is Africa Malaria Day, a day set aside by African governments committed to fighting Malaria and bringing about an end to the loss of 3000 of Africa’s children to Malaria everyday. This year’s theme is “Free Africa from Malaria Now”. Doctors For Life International’s (DFL) AID to Africa project provides medical services in Malaria endemic areas in Southern Africa, including Mozambique and Angola. DFL has also been working for several years to improve access to affordable Malaria medicines. DFL’s efforts include the pursuit of the scientific development of Artemisia, an herbal product and an effective tool against Malaria. In addition to the many activities taking place all over Africa today, governments all over the world are taking steps to join in the partnership against Malaria. Following the White House summit on Malaria in December 2006, the United States designated April 25 as Malaria Awareness Day in the US. The first ever Malaria Awareness Day is being commemorated today in the United States with various activities including an all day display at the Capitol and a networking reception with congress members. European parliamentarians and various organizations are marking the day in the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Switzerland. The focus of this year’s Africa Malaria day is on the need to strengthen partnerships and for leaders across all sectors in Africa and the rest of the world to step up efforts to put an end to the preventable loss of lives from Malaria. *DFL is a non-profit organisation of more than 1300 doctors and professors who aim to provide affordable and efficient anti-malarial drugs to patients of developing countries.
