Doctors For Life Calls For Results Of Studies On Ubhejane To Be Made Public

The ongoing promotion and use of uBhejane (of which the contents, till date, are unknown) is alarming to both health professionals and the general public. uBhejane’s is produced by Zeblon Gwala who claims that the recipe was given to him by his dead grandfather, a traditional healer, who had appeared to him in a dream. Doctors For Life International (DFL) has noted with great concern that uBhejane:

  • Is still being sold as a cure for AIDS at a high cost.
  • That the results of studies at different Research Institutions are all inconclusive.
  • That these studies have not been made accessible to the public despite requests to do so.
  • That HIV patients on ARV treatment are advised by uBhejane "officials" to discontinue treatment with ARV's, and that the Minister of Health, who is ultimately responsible for an effective and efficient HIV/AIDS treatment program, has failed to condemn this practice.

HIV/AIDS is a life threatening condition, treatment of which demands the highest level of care. DFL is alarmed at the continuing reckless endangerment of the lives of vulnerable patients and calls on all relevant authorities to ensure that safe and identifiable treatment is available.
