An Invaluable Experience
By Stephen Pasquale & Amey Jose

A team of international volunteers from Mt. Zion School of Ministry and Times Square Church spent two weeks assisting the DFL center in Mthaleni and Esifuleni. With a forty-two percent HIV prevalence rate, this region of South Africa has been ravaged by the disease. The majority of these households also live in extremely poor conditions - without electricity, running water, and many other conveniences that are commonly taken for granted.

During our stay we were involved with the Home Based Care project which trains volunteers from the community to care for terminally ill patients in their homes. In addition to visiting and treating the patients, a meeting was held in which the registered nurses on our team educated the community volunteers about Infection Control and Tuberculosis. Moreover, the patients and families were particularly grateful for the spiritual care offered by our team.

Additionally, the group assisted with the Life Child project by leading the children in devotions, teaching English, and sharing and receiving love from the orphans.
Our time in this area was a blessing not just for those we ministered to but also for us as a group.
