Lifestyle Fair (Open Day) of the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban

Once again it came to many people's attention that there is a need for an organization like Doctors for Life International in the community. DFL was invited to participate in the Lifestyle Fair (Open Day) of the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban. This took place on September 8, 2006. Michelle Ramlal who organizes such events for the University invited DFL to put up a display that highlighted different issues that are harming our nation. For example: Aids, Abortion, Pornography, etc.

This was done with the purpose of reaching the students, especially the first years, with the information with regards to problems happening in our country and some possible solutions pertaining to these situations. As these students are our countries future doctors, DFL was very keen to highlight some of the ethical issues which will confront them within the medical field. Information about the scientific facts that have been ascertained from world wide research done on the effects of abortion, pornography, prostitution etc as well as the latest developments and statistics on Aids and STD’s was available and on display. The picture of a child dying of Herpes and Aids touched them, seeing an innocent child bearing the consequences of the immoral life the parents had lived. They pondered on the cure of such a destroying disease.

Several people stared in disbelief at a picture of an aborted baby. Many of them didn't know that abortion is the destruction of human life. They believed that abortion was just the getting rid of a bunch a cells, like removing a tumor, not the terminating of the life of a developing baby. DFL's display attracted a lot of interest and many students were challenged by what they saw and heard. Almost 100 students became members of DFL, 45% of which are interested in going on medical outreaches to the poorest parts of Africa where the people in need can be ministered to by bringing them the Gospel as well as medication.

Doctors for Life advocate only one solution to AIDS, “Abstinence before marriage and faithfulness among married couples."

'Doctors for Life International' represents more than 1400 medical doctors and specialists, three-quarters of who practice in South Africa. Since 1991 DFL has been actively promoting health care that is safe and efficient for all South Africans. DFL was founded as a South African organization in 1991 and has spread across the globe. DFL is involved in several community projects including orphan care, the care of terminal AIDS patients, malaria prevention and the care of abused women.
