Zambia , situated in south-central Africa , is one of Africa 's undiscovered gems. The country's large parks and reserves, particularly those on the Luangwa and Kafue rivers, offer magnificent opportunities to view the country's great variety of wildlife.
Most of Zambia is a high plateau, 900-1500 m above sea level. The great Zambezi River forms its southern border and in the southwest are the sands of the desolate Kalahari. To the east are isolated mountain ranges and the Nyika Plateau.
Zambia has several large rivers such as the Kafue River and a number of large natural lakes, the largest of which is Lake Bangweulu . Parts of lakes Mweru and Tanganyika are in Zambia . The Zambezi and Luapula rivers, and Lake Tanganyika are navigable.
The natural vegetation is mainly savanna with dry grassland in the south ranging to to more lush grassland with scattered bushes, trees and some forest in the north. Six per cent of Zambia is made up of vast wetlands and swamp forests. The country is home to 4 600 plant species, of which 200 are endemic.
Zambia shares borders with Angola to the west, the Democratic Republic of Congo to the north, Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi to the east, Mozambique to the southeast, Zimbabwe and Botswana to the south and Namibia 's Caprivi Strip to the southwest.
The country has nine provinces: Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula, Lusaka , Northern, Northwestern, Southern and Western.
